INTRO: Testimony of friend-finding his Son in his ex-wife’s home while she and her friends did drugs.

BODY: Peter was a Broken man. Let’s look closely at how broken he actually was:

PROBLEM 1: PETER WAS DOUBTFUL (Matthew 14:28)
1. Note verse 29, “come.” It was the “creator” (Col. 1:16) who commanded him. Thus he walked on water.
2. “In every COMMAND and in every PROMISE of the Word of God is the POWER, the very LIFE OF GOD, by which the command may be fulfilled and the promise realized.” (COL, page 7).
3. YET Peter doubted, and began to sink (verses 30-31).
4. PETER WAS A BROKEN MAN, BUT JESUS CORRECTS HIM: See verses 31-32.

PROBLEM 2: PETER WAS PRIDEFUL (Matthew 16:16)
1. Who was Jesus? Peter answers, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” (Matthew 16:16).
2. Jesus calls him a stone (verses 17-19).
3. Later Peter “rebukes” Jesus (21-22).
4. PETER WAS A BROKEN MAN, BUT JESUS CORRECTS HIM: See verses 23-24. Peter confesses Jesus is the TRUE ROCK (Acts 4:11).

PROBLEM 3: PETER IS IMPULSIVE – ATTACKS THE SOLDIER (John 18:4-6)
1. The voice of God spoke through Christ and melted their hearts in terror – they FELL BACK (verse 6)
2. Peter sees this and takes courage – strikes a soldier in his ear (verse 10). IMPULSIVE.
3. PETER WAS A BROKEN MAN, BUT JESUS CORRECTS HIM: See verse 11, and also Matthew 26:52-54.

PROBLEM 4: PETER LIES AND BETRAYS JESUS (Mark 14:29-30)
1. Jesus predicts Peter will betray Jesus (verses 29-30)
2. Jesus enters Gethsemane, blood-stained face – falls to the ground (verse 35) only to find Peter sleeping (verse 37).
3. Jesus pleads with Peter to pray BEFORE the temptation comes (verse 38). He tells him of the betrayal, yet tells him to pray. The prophecy was conditional. PETER COULD HAVE OVERCOME HAD HE KEPT PRAYING!
4. THE BETRAYAL: Peter LIES (verse 68). Peter lies with CURSING (verse 71).
5. PETER WAS A BROKEN MAN, BUT JESUS CORRECTS HIM: See Luke 22:61 – CORRECTS HIM WITH A LOOK!
6. Verse 62 – Peter weeps bitterly – “A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” (Psalm 51:17)

PROBLEM 5: PETER IS A HYPOCRITE (Galatians 2)
1. 17 years after Paul’s conversion (Gal. 1:18, 2:1), Peter shows hypocrisy (Galatians 2:11-13).
2. PETER STILL HAS BROKENNESS, BUT JESUS, THROUGH PAUL, CORRECTS HIM: See verse 14.

SOLUTION: LIST HIS SINS: (1) DOUBT (2) PRIDE (3) IMPULSIVE (4) LIAR/BETRAYER (5) HYPOCRITE

1. BUT AT EVERY MOMENT, with every impulse, Jesus was there TO CORRECT AND FORGIVE HIM.
2. PETER CALLS BELIEVERS TO OVERCOME “ALL” THEIR SINS.

  • Be Holy as God is Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16)
  • Overcome ALL their sins (1 Peter 2:1 – “all” repeated three times)

3. This same Peter who was Doubtful, Presumptuous, Prideful, Impulsive, a Liar, a Betrayer!
4. But BEFORE he tells them to overcome their sins, he tells them HOW it is going to happen! —–> 1 Peter 1:7-9.
5. SUFFERING TRIALS BRING VICTORY OVER SINS ——> 1 Peter 4:1-2.
6. Group of formerly broken people: Revelation 14:12 (they may have battle scars)

CONCLUSION: Moment I was with my mom during her last moments.

Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

Psalm 69:20
Reproach has broken my heart and I am so sick And I looked for sympathy, but there was none, And for comforters, but I found none.
